This is an attempt at an origin tale, rebooting Lara for a new generation of fans. She's less the cool buxom sexpot with the twin pistols than a struggling young woman facing her fears.

This is the first time Lara Croft has been envisioned as a character. There's a level of broader realism that the movie holds onto, positioning this Croft as less the gun blazing super cool badass and more as a stealthy, plucky, and scrappy figure of moderate action.

There are moments where she hides and moments where she runs, as they are the best recourse. She's not imposing in her build and poise like a Gina Carano Haywire but Vikander's got some serious moves.

With all that in mind, let's not get too carried away here. Lara Croft may have some extra dimensions but she's not exactly a fully formed, three-dimensional character or boasting the kind of magnetic personality that drew us to Indiana Jones or even a Nathan Drake.

She's capable but also limited in interest and charisma. The action is invigorating enough and given a clear scope of play.

Norwegian director Roar Uthaug The Wave orchestrates the action in clean long shots and precise edits, allowing the audience a clear sense of what is happening.

A frantic bicycle chase and foot chase in the first act are given extra vitality by a roaming camera that takes in the full view. There's enough variety in the action and natural consequences to keep things interesting.

This is a movie that doesn't feel overpowered with CGI, even though I know it's present. Uthaug makes a point of emphasizing practical effects and sets, which adds a further level of realism to the excitement.

I'd call it a more pared down, realistic version of an action adventure but it still has outlandish set pieces like Lara finding refuge atop a crumbling WWII era bomber that just so happens to be wedged atop a rock face overlooking a steep waterfall.

Even during these moments, and the last act takes place almost entirely within the ancient tomb and its traps, the movie keeps things relatively credible.

It's fun without being too flippant and serious enough without losing its sense of amusement. Tomb Raider reminded me a lot of a big-screen version of an Uncharted game, a rollicking adventure that also feels rooted in our own world, but with a hint of the supernatural creeping along the edges.

The conclusion has a few nice surprises following this pattern even with the possibility of actual zombies emerging. Vianker The Danish Girl acquits herself nicely in the realm of action-adventure.

She gained twelve pounds of muscle and has a pretty impressive six-pack. Vikander is a smaller actress by nature but the filmmakers do a fine job of placing her in believable action scenarios that rely upon her athleticism.

Her Lara is a stubbornly independent protagonist who refuses to give up, which makes her a winning force even when her personality fails to sufficiently light up the screen.

Vikander hurls herself into the role, performing an impressive array of stunts, and yelping along to the genre demands.

There are some plot holes that are hard to ignore, mostly pertaining to motivations. In the first act, we learn tat Lara is heir to a vast fortune of money and a big company that owns many other subsidiaries.

However, she refuses to essentially inherit the company because it means having to sign papers declaring her missing father as deceased.

I understand the character's rejection of wanting to accept her father's death, but when taken to this extent it becomes almost comical. Lara is seen scraping by for enough money to survive on her own.

She's forced to pawn her heirlooms and work as a bicycle messenger. She's struggling to get by and yet her pride is standing between her and a massive fortune.

This is just stupid. What's to stop Lara from signing the paperwork, inheriting the fortune, and using said fortune to continue the search for her father?

There's also the motivation of her absentee father, who left to thwart the bad guys from finding the special tomb. However, he inadvertently leads them there because he was tracked.

Had he not even left, the bad guys would not have found the island's location and he could have been in Lara's life. This is transparent potting to simply move the pieces across a board.

Another example is Lu Ren Daniel Wu a ship captain ally she picks up that serves no real purpose other than ferrying her to the island.

One character that benefits from motivation is the villain, Vogel. He's not some mustache-twirling rogue but rather a guy hired for a job that wants to go home and see his kids again.

It's a nice, empathetic touch that makes Vogel grounded and a better fit. Tomb Raider is a smaller, leaner, and enjoyable little action movie of modest ambitions.

That sounds very conditional, I'll admit, but it's a scaled-down version of an exaggerated character doing splashy, sexy, exaggerated action heroics.

It's a stripped down reboot that grounds the action while still finding enough ways to have fun. It does get a little caught up in the edicts of an origin tale, overpowering moments with "First" significance First Adventure, First Kill, First Fight, etc.

There are also some head-scratching plot holes that get glossed over to keep things moving along. Vikander is one tough cookie, and the film celebrates her brains as well as her brawn and absent any ogling camerawork.

Tomb Raider is a suitably exciting action film that gives some hope for future Croft adventures. More Top Movies Trailers Forums. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.

Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he's truly gone.

Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can't understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad's last-known destination: But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.

Suddenly, the stakes couldn't be higher for Lara, who--against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit--must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.

If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider. Ana Miller Derek Jacobi Taxi Driver Samuel Mak Edit Storyline Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.

In a post-credits scene, two weeks before Lara and Jonah leave Siberia Lara asks Ana if she killed her father.

Ana denies it, admitting that Trinity gave her the order. She is then killed by a sniper, who asks his unseen superior about killing Lara and is ordered to stand down.

In the Baba Yaga downloadable content , Lara investigates a disturbance in the Soviet mine. After fighting off a Trinity patrol she finds a young girl, Nadia, hiding in a sawmill.

Nadia confides in Lara about her search for her grandfather, Ivan. Ivan disappeared while trying to enter the Wicked Vale, a valley reportedly haunted by Baba Yaga , a witch in Slavic folklore.

Ivan blames the witch for the death of his wife, and wants to kill her. Lara is skeptical about Baba Yaga's existence but, since Nadia is injured, agrees to enter the Wicked Vale and find Ivan.

In the Vale, Lara is exposed to a rare pollen with potent hallucinogenic properties. After stumbling through a forest where she is tormented by visions of her father's suicide, she meets Baba Yaga and a pack of demonic wolves.

Lara narrowly escapes with her life and finds herself in a small, Soviet-era outpost. She unearths evidence of a secret Soviet biological-weapons project which attempted to harness the pollen, which abruptly ended when the researchers—including Serafima, a biochemist imprisoned in a nearby gulag—succumbed to the hallucinations.

Lara deduces that Serafima weaponized the pollen, developed an antidote and kept her research secret from the military. With Nadia's help, Lara synthesizes a basic antidote from Serafima's recipe and returns to the Wicked Vale.

Resisting the effects of the pollen, Lara finds the injured Ivan at the entrance to Baba Yaga's lair. Unable to leave the Wicked Vale while Baba Yaga controls it, Lara battles the witch under the pollen's influence and destroys its source.

Baba Yaga is revealed as Serafima, who was led to believe that her husband, Ivan, and daughter were dead and used the pollen to become Baba Yaga and torment her captors.

In the Cold Darkness Awakened content, Lara enters a decommissioned Soviet weapons bunker which has been breached by a Trinity patrol. Trinity has inadvertently released an unstable pathogen into the air, which causes the people it infects to regress to a zombie -like state.

Men are particularly vulnerable, since the virus stimulates testosterone and adrenaline production. The pathogen was created to create an army of unstoppable super-soldiers by a Soviet researcher, all of whose experiments failed.

He died in the facility after accidentally releasing the pathogen, proud that he had created a weapon to defend his homeland.

With Sofia and Nadia providing support from a helicopter, Lara tries to find the source of the pathogen before an enormous cloud is released into the atmosphere and contaminates the Remnant valley.

The women plan to channel the pathogen from three towers into the central tower, detonating it and burning off the toxin.

Lara shuts down each tower, collecting equipment, rescuing female prisoners and eliminating waves of the infected Trinity soldiers before entering the core tower.

While fighting off the infected soldiers, she triggers a catastrophic explosion and jumps from the tower to Nadia and Sofia's helicopter. Nadia and Lara watch the explosion as they fly to safety.

Although the resulting fire burns the remaining pathogen, documents found in the facility indicate that the release was no accident; Trinity reactivated the facility to acquire a sample of the pathogen, and an agent of Trinity escaped with it before the bunker was destroyed.

Blood Ties begins with Lara reading a note from her uncle, who says that since her mother disappeared he is the rightful owner of the Croft estate.

With trees working their way into the side of the house and the roof caving in, Lara's childhood home desperately needs repair.

She finds her father's safe and searches the manor for its combination, hoping to find his will and thus prove her ownership.

She finds artifacts from her past, and finally figures out the combination; however, the safe contains no proof of her ownership.

Lara find her mother's tomb under the main staircase, proof of her death. With both her parents proven dead, their property passes to her and she moves back in.

Lara's Nightmare is similar to Blood Ties , with Lara's uncle unwilling to give her the manor. She fights off hordes of zombies and skulls before finding the master key.

Lara kills a large skull in the main hallway, ending her nightmare. Bobby Tahouri , known for his work on Game of Thrones , composed the soundtrack.

One of the game's intentions was to craft a more "personal" experience for players, and the team wanted to explore the journey in which Lara becomes the tomb raider.

She becomes determined to uncover more myths, and convinces the world that they are real at the end of the reboot; this became her major driving force in the sequel.

The team tried to find a balance, making Lara more experienced and competent but vulnerable in crisis and appealing to players.

Rhianna Pratchett found Rise of the Tomb Raider more difficult to write than the reboot, figuring out Lara's initial mental state and character introduction.

Its cast was significantly smaller than the reboot, so more screen time could be given to each character. Judgment Day , whose protagonist Sarah Connor and Lara Croft are "burdened with a truth that no one believes".

The Edge and The Grey inspired game scenes in which Lara fought bears and wolves. Hanna and The Descent inspired the game's bows, arrows and pickaxe, and Aliens vs.

Predator and The Day After Tomorrow helped the team conceive the game's tundra setting. They worked on improving the story's pacing, which Horton thought as important as the story itself.

Several features with gameplay potential but not fitting its context, such as vehicles and an early scene in which Lara battled enemies in a jeep , were cut.

The skill-upgrades system was overhauled to include more player options. After the developers listened to player feedback, the game emphasized tomb-raiding more than its predecessors.

They intended to add more ancient tombs, making players feel like real discoverers and inspiring awe. The tombs were made larger than the reboot, and water puzzles featured in older Tomb Raider games were included.

The puzzles were often interconnected, with the team adopting a nested-puzzle approach. The game world was designed to reflect Lara's distorted mental state, and the team introduced the concept of "ominous beauty" to achieve this.

The color scheme was vibrant, reflecting the game's large scale. The team was inspired by other video games and fine art , including Russian realists.

To add variety to its landscape, the team introduced the Oasis with a dramatically-different look from Siberia. Bobby Tahouri 's primary goal in composing the game's music was to support its narrative.

Tahouri spoke to Crystal Dynamics in and contracted to write the score in late , delighted to have more composition time than previous projects.

He listened to the earlier games' soundtracks to "immerse [himself] in the Tomb Raider world". The soundtrack was recorded in Nashville by a piece string-and-brass orchestra, including cello, woodwinds, dulcimer and a handpan developed by Saraz Musical Instruments.

The Siberian music features an instrument similar to a gusli and low-pitched male singing. Dynamic Percussion System middleware creates music as the game is played.

Camilla Luddington voiced Lara and provided motion capture at a Los Angeles studio over a two-year period. According to the actress, one of the greatest challenges in voicing Lara was having to "yell over wind and snow".

Spraying Mova fluorescent paint on Luddington's face, they obtained 7, points of reference. They focused on Lara's physical details in cutscenes, where her muscles tensed as she climbed or her skin became blotchy from the cold.

The studio used pose-based deformers to sculpt Lara's "exact shape" as she moved. The team also used wrinkle maps, allowing more natural, realistic movement for the character.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was powered by the Foundation in-house game engine. The team adopted a "kit-bashing technique", quickly assembling a level with modules and rebuilding it until they were satisfied.

To improve the game's graphical fidelity, the team partnered with Nixxes Software which ported the Xbox version. On 1 August , Square Enix Europe executive Phil Rogers announced that a new Tomb Raider game was in development for the eighth generation of video game consoles.

Son of Rome in which both were released for Microsoft Windows. This sparked player outrage from players since Tomb Raider had a longer history with PlayStation , who blamed franchise owner Square Enix for the decision.

Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher said that the partnership could help the team "deliver the best game that [they] can". Rise of the Tomb Raider was released on 10 November , [44] and the Windows version was released on 28 January Produced by Dark Horse Comics and written by Pratchett and Gail Simone , the comics bridged the gap between the reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider and explained the absence of some secondary characters in the sequel.

The game was supported by downloadable content, and its first post-launch update was released on 4 December It introduced an endurance mode, with elements of a survival game as Lara hunts and crafts items while facing hidden dangers and environmental hazards.

The edition developed by Nixxes Software and Crystal Dynamics adds several new features, including a classic outfit inspired by Tomb Raider III ; [57] cooperative gameplay for endurance mode; Blood Ties , a combat-free mode in which Lara explores the Croft manor; and Lara's Nightmare , in which players fight infected enemies in the manor.

It's Alicia Vikander's performance alone that makes Tomb Raider unquestionably the greatest film adaptation of a video game and merits a worthwhile sequel.

Selling only that aforementioned "iconic" action-figure version of [Lara] is what the poster is supposed to do; not the first movie in what is blatantly aiming to become a name-above-the-title franchise for Vikander to bank on between prestige-projects.

Like Lara herself, there is a tremendous amount of potential here that is never fully realized. Maybe the next tomb will be a bit deeper.

Don't get me wrong, Tomb Raider isn't great but it knows what it is and plays to its strengths more often than not. Many sequels followed over the years taking us up to the release which was a reboot of the games series.

This version gave us a new in depth look into the origins of the games protagonist, Lara Croft. A Tsunami of Cliches the plot: The most generic plot they have come up with?

Lara Alicia Vikander is essentially a mega rich British woman thanks to her fathers business of whatever. But for some reason Lara is not interested in accepting her fathers inheritance because reasons.

Her father Richard Dominic West disappeared whilst searching for Himiko, a mythical Queen who was said to have power over life and death.

Richard is presumed dead of course. So after much personal angst and discovering the stereotypical hidden chamber stocked with clues, Lara goes off on an intrepid adventure in search of her dad.

Briefly, she meets up with a good looking toned Chinese bloke. She convinces him to help her. They both sail off to find this mysterious island set right in the middle of a treacherous section of the Pacific where no on ever survives type scenario.

They get shipwrecked on the island. Lara gets 'rescued' by what turns out to be the bad guys. The bad guys work for a dodgy company who are also after this mystical supernatural power.

The bad guys are all big muscular blokes carrying large automatic weapons. They find the location of the mystical Queens tomb. Its chock full of booby traps.

They get past all the booby traps. All the bad guys get killed. Lara makes it out alive as the whole place comes tumbling down. Generic enough for you?

The start of this movie doesn't really help. Lara is in London working for as a bike courier and decides to enter into this rather childish game of chase for money.

Basically loads of blokes try to catch her and grab this fox tail off her bike essentially a flag before she can reach a certain destination, I think?

The entire sequence looks lame and stupid. Its cringeworthy because the whole time there is this rock soundtrack playing in the background as if the entire sequence is supposed to be 'kewl'; like its some kind of extreme sports around west London, pfft!

All the guys chasing her have these extreme haircuts, shades, clearly expensive bike gear, inked and pierced up etc Its so flippin' pathetic.

But at least that sequence was real in real locations. Unfortunately so much of this movie looks fake because its bolstered with tonnes of CGI.

The now infamous waterfall sequence which we all saw in the trailers, yeah it looks terrible. The bomber looks terrible, the rapids look terrible, and Vikander copy and pasted against it all looks terrible.

Speaking of that bomber, kinda looked like a WWII plane. That in itself would be a huge discovery No time for that. Literally everything Lara does in this movie is against bloody obvious CGI.

All the set piece backdrops, every time she leaps across something in cliched slow motion , hangs from something, stands in front of something.

Not only that but Lara is bloody useless in this movie too. She literally spends the whole time getting beaten to a pulp by various blokes, only occasionally does she manage to actually win I mean on one hand that's more realistic for sure but blimey does she take a beating in this.

Lara also takes a huge amount of damage ranging from really nasty landings from heights, getting struck by objects, and even getting a puncture wound in the belly!

Its like they went for realism in terms of fighting blokes, but went down the videogame invincibility route for surviving really nasty incidents.

I mean it was so fudging obvious right from the start. The fact it actually happened and director Roar Uthaug tried to make it surprising just made me facepalm.

Not only that but naturally her dad just happens to have a bow and arrow with him, something that Lara just happens to be a dab hand at ugh!!

So now Lara's running around with an apparent unlimited supply of arrows. Oh and all the bad guys drop dead straight away after being shot by an arrow, stone dead instantly.

Lets take a quick look at the bad guys who are led by Mathias Vogel Walton Goggins and who all work for the shadowy Hyd I mean Trinity organisation.

Well as I said before they're pretty much you're bog standard merc type in movies these days. All roided up with hipster beards and tattoos.

There only appears to be about six of them at first but their numbers become inexplicably bigger during an action sequence.

Suddenly there are loads of guys just waiting to get shot with guns or arrows. The only bad guy of any worth is of course Vogel.

A solid slimy villain who is quite happy to kill people. The rest are just background fodder for weapons and booby traps. I find it amusing in movies like this how both the protagonist and antagonist are looking for one specific item and often ignore everything else.

Like in this movie they discover this ancient tomb with wall to wall treasures such as ancient text on walls, markings, various artifacts, what looked like precious gems or stones to stop a booby trap etc Heck even the various skeletons lying around the place could be historically important.

But they always totally ignore all that, often allowing the stuff to get destroyed in the process. Frankly the entire movie is a snooze fest until Lara and co reach the subterranean tomb of Himiko.

I mean they virtually copy some aspects beat for beat to a degree. I quite liked the notion that this ancient mystical power turns out to be a deadly potent disease.

But then they absolutely ruined it by going down this zombie-esque state route. I mean honesty, hasn't that whole angle been totally milked dry already, come on guys.

I quite liked how they made the movie a bit more adult orientated, a bit dark. Its was also acceptable that Lara wasn't a superhero type character all the time, although I felt she did need to be a bit tougher at times.

Its a fine balance I know but Lara did seem a bit sidelined in her own movie at times maybe that's just me. But overall I'm pretty shocked at how generic this was and the fact they copied other movies.

You just can't win with game adaptations. This one is so close to the two latest games that you sometimes wonder if you played exactly that action sequence before.

Alicia Vikander is also a pretty perfect cast, both likable and tough. Unfortunately the showdown in the proverbial tomb falls a bit short, both in design and delivery.

This is still a fine adventure film that would deserve to be continued. How to deliver a film based on a video game known for its lust appeal, physicality, and some few puzzles to figure out?

Well, this is more than simply a decent attempt, that's yards better than the previous one. Vikander provides the charisma aplenty and the action fully engages the physicality of the video games.

Interestingly, the "little girl looking for her long lost Dad" angle was possibly the weakest element here. Felt like the second one would be better somehow.

Lara Croft was best known for her exaggerated physical assets rendered as Madonna-worthy pointed polygons and short shorts than as any sort of character.

She was realized on the big screen in 's Tomb Raider as an elite physical specimen portrayed by Angelina Jolie, where the filmmakers went the added step of padding Jolie's bosom to better reflect the source material's image.

The filmmakers literally thought this aspect would be make-or-break with fans, as if Jolie herself was not naturally vivacious enough.

As you can imagine, Lara Croft was primarily seen as a sexy avatar, whether on the small screen or the big screen. This new Tomb Raider aims to better ground its story, tone, and central heroine, and it mostly succeeds.

This is a solid, pleasantly enjoyable mid-tier action movie that might also qualify as the best video-game-to-film adaptation so far sorry Uwe Boll.

Lara Alicia Vikander is struggling in the wake of her father's Dominic West disappearance. It's been years but she holds onto hope that dear old dad is still out there.

One day, she discovers her father's secret study and a video message he recorded confessing why he left. He's seeking a fabled tomb on a hidden island off the coast of Japan, a tomb devoted to a powerful goddess of myth who sacrificed her admirers.

Also looking for the tomb is Vogel Walton Goggins and a team of armed mercenaries. Lara must stay ahead of the mercenaries, find her father and the long-lost hidden tomb.

This is a Lara Croft stripped down and absent the male gaze, which has defined her travails just as much as the treasure hunting adventures.

There's not a single shot in the movie that seeks to ogle Vikander's lean body. Even her outfit, as mentioned a staple of Croft's early appeal, is a modest take top and khakis.

The emphasis this time is on what she endures and overcomes rather than the curvature of her body. This is an attempt at an origin tale, rebooting Lara for a new generation of fans.

She's less the cool buxom sexpot with the twin pistols than a struggling young woman facing her fears. This is the first time Lara Croft has been envisioned as a character.

Tomb Raider between and , is a media franchise that originated with an action-adventure video game series created by British gaming company Core Design.

Formerly owned by Eidos Interactive , then by Square Enix after their acquisition of Eidos in , the franchise focuses on a fictional British archaeologist Lara Croft , who travels around the world searching for lost artefacts and infiltrating dangerous tombs and ruins.

The gameplay generally focuses around action-adventure exploration of environments, solving puzzles, navigating hostile environments filled with traps, and fighting numerous enemies.

Additional media has grown up around the theme in the form of film adaptations , comics and novels.

Development on the original Tomb Raider game began in Its success prompted Core Design to develop a new game annually for the next four years, which put a strain on staff.

The sixth game, The Angel of Darkness , faced difficulties during development and was considered a failure at release. This prompted Eidos to switch development duties to Crystal Dynamics , which has been the series' primary developer since then.

Other developers have contributed either to spin-off titles within the series or ports of mainline titles. Tomb Raider games have sold over 63 million copies worldwide.

The series has generally met with critical acclaim, with the series being noted as one of the pioneers of the action-adventure genre.

Lara Croft herself has become one of the most recognisable video game protagonists in existence, winning numerous accolades and earning places on the Walk of Game and Guinness World Records.

Alongside being praised for pioneering female characters in video games, she has also been the subject of controversy due to her sex appeal being used for marketing.

After the sixth game in the series released to a lukewarm reception in , development was transferred to North American studio Crystal Dynamics , who have handled the main series since then.

A month before release, Eidos finalised a deal with Sony Computer Entertainment to keep the console version of Tomb Raider II and future games exclusive to PlayStation until the year The Last Revelation , released in In , with the end of the PlayStation exclusivity deal, the game also released on the Dreamcast.

After a three-year gap, Tomb Raider: The PS2 version was released in Japan that same year. It will serve as the third and final game in the rebooted origin story.

Curse of the Sword , was released in for the GBC. Beginning in , a separate subseries titled Lara Croft was in development, offering experiences separate from the development of the main series and existing in its own continuity.

Relic Run , was released in The Angel of Darkness was originally the first game in a trilogy, with its sequel titled The Lost Dominion.

While The Lost Dominion was undergoing preliminary development, the negative reception of The Angel of Darkness caused the entire trilogy to be scrapped.

The Anniversary Edition in late , with a projected release date of Christmas Development continued while Core Design staff were working on the platformer Free Running.

It was suggested by staff that Eidos did not want to let outside developers handle the franchise.

Lara Croft is the main protagonist and playable character of the series: She has brown eyes and brown hair worn in a braid or ponytail.

The character's classic outfit consists of a turquoise singlet, light brown shorts, calf-high boots, and tall white socks. Recurring accessories include fingerless gloves, a backpack, a utility belt with holsters on either side, and twin pistols.

Later games have multiple new outfits for her. Lara Croft has been voiced by five actresses in the video game series: In other media, Croft was also voiced by Minnie Driver in the animated series and portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in feature films.

Multiple models and body doubles have also portrayed Croft in promotional material up until the reboot in Eight different real-life models have also portrayed her at promotional events.

The circumstances of her first adventures, along with the drive behind her adventures, differ depending on the continuity.

In the original and Legends continuities, she is on a plane that crashes in the Himalayas: The circumstances of her survival were originally part of the game, but were cut due to time constraints.

In the Legends continuity, her mother Amelia was also involved in the crash, and she is partially driven by the need to discover the truth behind her mother's disappearance and vindicate her father's theories about Amelia's disappearance.

In the reboot continuity, Lara's mother vanished at an early age, and her father became obsessed with finding the secrets of immortality, eventually resulting in an apparent suicide.

Lara distanced herself from her father's memory, believing like many others that his obsession had caused him to go mad.

After studying at university, Lara gets an opportunity to work on an archaeology program, in the search for the mythic kingdom of Yamatai.

The voyage to find the kingdom results in a shipwreck on an island, which is later discovered to be Yamatai, however the island is also home to savage bandits, who were victims of previous wrecks.

Lara's attempts to find a way off the island lead her to discover that the island itself is stopping them from leaving, which she discovered is linked to the still living soul of the Sun Queen, Himiko.

Lara must find a way to banish the spirit of the sun queen in order to get home. However, she must survive long enough to do it. The aftermath of the events of the game causes Lara to see that her father was right, and that she had needlessly distanced herself from him.

She decides to finish his work, and uncover the mysteries of the world. The gameplay of Tomb Raider is primarily based around an action-adventure framework, with Lara navigating environments and solving mechanical and environmental puzzles, in addition to fighting enemies and avoiding traps.

These puzzles, primarily set within ancient tombs and temples, can extend across multiple rooms and areas within a level.

Lara could also swim through water, a rarity in games at the time that has continued through the series. The camera automatically adjusts depending on Lara's action, but defaults to a third-person perspective in most instances.

This basic formula remained unchanged through the first series of games. Angel of Darkness also added stealth elements.

For Legend , the control scheme and character movement was redesigned to provide a smooth and fluid experience. One of the key elements present was how buttons for different actions cleanly transitioned into different actions, along with these moves being incorporated into combat to create effects such as stunning or knocking down enemies.

Quick-time events were also added into certain segments within each level, and many of the puzzles were based around sophisticated in-game physics.

Using this set-up, they created a greater variety of moves and greater interaction with the environment, along with expanding and improving combat.

Gameplay altered from progression through linear levels to navigating an open world, with hunting for supplies and upgrading equipment and weapons becoming a key part of gameplay.

The combat was redesigned to be similar to the Uncharted series: Gard originally envisioned her as a man: Her design underwent multiple revisions and redrafts during early development.

After the first game's success, Gard was no longer given full creative control, and it was stated by development staff that he was both saddened and disappointed by the use of Lara Croft's sex appeal in marketing.

Gard left Core Design in to found his own gaming company Confounding Factor , and was replaced by Stuart Atkinson. Over the next three years, Core Design was committed to delivering a Tomb Raider game annually, putting considerable strain on staff.

This did not work, and while a fifth game was created, the team stated that they were not fully invested in its development. After the critical backlash of The Angel of Darkness , Eidos decided to take production of the Tomb Raider series out of Core Design's hands and give it to another subsidiary studio.

Production of the next game was given to Crystal Dynamics , a studio that had made its name with the Legacy of Kain series.

He added that "For a UK company, moving the development of its prized asset from Derby to California was a big decision to make but, as it turned out, absolutely the right one to make.

Alongside Underworld , the team decided to create a new subseries that featured the character of Lara Croft while not using the Tomb Raider moniker and using the aesthetics of the Legend continuity.

He created the original theme music after having discussions with Gard about the character of Lara Croft. Having decided to use Classical English music as an inspiration, he decided to create something simple for the theme song.

Its simplicity made rearrangements and orchestrations easy. For his work on the first three Tomb Raider games, he was given fairly minimal briefs, and for Tomb Raider III he was working on the game as a freelancer as he had left the company.

He composed the opening theme for The Last Revelation , saying that the opening melody came to him out of the blue, and added Egyptian motifs to fit in with the game's setting.

Chronicles was originally going to have a sizeable original opening theme, but due to time constraints the majority of it ended up being discarded, much to Connelly's later regret.

Only the opening segment survived. Scored using a full orchestra as opposed to the synthesised instruments of previous titles, it was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.

For Legend , Troels Brun Folmann composed the music and managed the sound effects. Alongside composing a large amount of music for the game, he created micro-scores for small segments within gameplay.

Along with his orchestral style, he created a special instrument to create discordant sounds within the music, and musical elements from around the globe to represent the inhabitants of the game's island location.

Temple of Osiris was the first title in the Lara Croft subseries to have an original score, using Egyptian and Middle Eastern musical elements while creating a new main theme that could be used in future Lara Croft games.

The first Tomb Raider used a custom-built game engine, as other equivalent engines available to Core Design at the time were not versatile enough to realise the team's vision.

The engine was designed by Paul Douglas, who also handled the game's artificial intelligence AI and the three-dimensional 3D graphics.

The choice of a 3D game was influenced by the team's opinion that the game type was under-represented when compared to first-person shooters such as Doom.

Its 3D style meant multiple elements were difficult to implement, including the AI and camera control.

Another noted aspect was the multi-layered levels, as compared to equivalent 3D action-adventure games of the time which were limited to a flat-floor system.

Lara's movements were hand-animated and coordinated rather than created using motion capture. The reason for this was that the team wanted uniformity in her movement, which was not possible with motion capture technology of the time.

The first five games make use of full-motion video cutscenes. For the first three games, they were primarily used as transitional periods depicting Lara moving from one level to another or one location to another.

For Angel of Darkness , a new engine was built from scratch, but due to being unfamiliar and unused to the technology of the PS2, the team encountered multiple problems such as needing to remove areas and characters due to polygon restrictions.

Due to the deadlines imposed, the team were forced to cut corners, meaning that the game reached store shelves in a poor condition.

Both the character of Lara Croft and the concepts behind the Tomb Raider franchise have evolved thematically and in popularity since the first game's release in Upon release, Tomb Raider became an unexpected success with gamers, reaching the top of sales charts and remaining for a considerable time.

It went on to sell over 7 million units worldwide. Since the release of Legend , the series has picked up in sales and popularity.

The Sands of Time. Multiple video game journalists, including Electronic Gaming Monthly ' s Crispin Boyer in and Eurogamer 's Martyn Carroll in , have cited the series as a pioneer in the medium, both laying the foundations for and popularising action-adventure and platforming games.

Carrol also credited the series for bringing video gaming out into the cultural mainstream. The character of Lara Croft has similarly enjoyed popularity, standing out during her initial appearance in the male-dominated video game market, and continuing to stand out throughout the series' history.

As part of the latter honours, Guinness World Records editor Gaz Deaves said that the character "epitomises all that's great about video gaming".

He also cited other writers' statements that her popularity stemmed from player empathy with her ability to survive tough situations, alongside contrasting against weaker female characters such as Princess Peach.

Later, apparently more "realistic" redesigns lessened these criticisms to a degree. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
